Remember last Saturday?  You know…last Saturday when I made these:

Fried Deviled Eggs…remember?

Yeah, I totally don’t see a look of recognition there, so here’s the post if ya wanna refresh your memory.

Anyways, when I made these, my son Joey…Oh, surely you remember Joey?

5 years old…hates green beans.  Joey.

Anyways, after sampling a fried deviled egg, conversation between Joey and I went like this:

Joey:  Mommy, you’re the best cooker ever.

Amy:  Uh, thanks…what’s wrong?

Joey:  (looking pensive)  Well, Mommy…could you fry me some cookies?

Amy:  No, honey…Mommy BAKES coo…wait, say that again?

Joey:  Can’t you just fry me up some cookies to go with these eggs?

Once again, the brilliance of this child amazes me.

Can I fry cookies?  Fried cookies?

Fried cookies!  Of course, it’s so simple!

Well, okay…I’m not going to fry actual cookies.

But I am going to fry chocolate chip cookie dough.

Freakin’ brilliant.

This is the recipe for cookie dough that I put in my ice cream…no eggs.   This is cookie dough that you can serve at a slumber party and not worry about Sam and Ella coming to visit.

Let’s start with the ingredients for the dough:

2 tbsp brown sugar, 1/2 cup flour, 3 tbsp white sugar, 2 tbsp margarine, 1/4 tsp vanilla.

Kinda reminiscent of chocolate chip cookies, right?

Mix that together, then chop up 1/4 cup of chocolate chips.

You can leave them whole – I just like the finer chocolate pieces in this.

Stir those in, then scoop the cookie dough onto a baking sheet.

Amy, you’re not going to bake it…you can put them closer together.  Duh.

It doesn’t make many…feel free to double/triple this recipe as needed.

Throw this into the freezer for a couple of hours.

After a couple of hours, start in on the batter.

Wet meets dry, similar to…well, similar to almost everything I make.

Wet:

1 egg, 1/2 cup milk, 2 tsp vegetable oil, 1/4 tsp vanilla

Dry:

1/2 cup flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 tbsp sugar

Whisk separately….

Then together.  Which I did.  Not.  Photograph.  Bad, Amy.  Bad.

Heat the fryer to 375.

Here’s my fry station:

Batter – Fryer – Paper Towels.

Drop the cookie balls into the batter…

Then into the fryer:

Allow me to make a suggestion here:

If you think you can walk away from these and wash up a few dishes while they’re frying:   Don’t.  Don’t walk away.  It only takes about 30 seconds for these to brown, then you want to instantly pull them out. Experience speaking, pal.  Experience.  I lost 3 of these because I thought I had time to scrub a pan or two.

But nevertheless, I saved a few:

Powdered sugar?  Yes, please.

And thank you.

No, thank YOU.

No, no…thank Y-O-U.

Don’t even try to tell me that doesn’t look good.

Guess what else:

After I did this, the fryer was still on, so I dumped the rest of the batter into the hot grease and made this:

Powdered sugar for you too?  Yes, please.

It’s like a funnel cake’s older, more awkward cousin.

When I was younger, and much less sophisticated than I am now, my mom and I would go to Long John Silver’s and I would ask them for a bowl of those crumbly fry pieces that always come with the fish:

And by “younger and much less sophisticated than I am now” I mean last week.

So yes, Virginia…you can fry cookie dough.

Yes, Joey, Mommy can fry you up some cookies to go with your fried deviled eggs.

And you want to try it too, I can see it in your eyes:

Fried Cookie Dough

Adapted from a recipe found at Allrecipes.com

For the cookie dough:

1/2 cup flour

2 tbsp brown sugar

3 tbsp white sugar

2 tbsp margarine

1/4 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup chocolate chips, chopped fine.

Mix together all ingredients.  Scoop out small portions onto a baking sheet and freeze for four hours or overnight.

For the fry batter:

1 egg

1/2 cup milk

1 tbsp vegetable oil

1/2 cup flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tbsp sugar

In a bowl, whisk together the egg, oil and milk.  In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and sugar.  Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.

To fry:

Heat the fryer to 375.  Remove cookie balls from freezer, dip into batter.  Carefully drop into hot grease, fry just until browned.  Drain on paper towels, dust with powdered sugar.

Fry remaining batter into a large funnel cake.

So fun, so yummy…and from the mouths of babes.
